Hanmaum Zen Center of New York, Brooklyn

Daehaeng Kun Sunim (the Great Master Daehaeng) established the first Hanmaum Seon (Zen) Center in Anyang city, just south of Seoul in 1972. There she began to teach people about their own true nature and how to rely on that nature.

Many people felt attracted to Daehaeng Sunim’s teachings because she showed them how they could practice in everyday life, regardless of how busy they were, what kind of job they had, or what their family situation was like.

As time went by, people from more distant areas began asking Daehaeng Sunim to start a Hanmaum Seon Center in their area. In this way, as of 2004, fifteen branches had been established within Korea, and nine Hanmaum Seon Centers have been established overseas. Daehaeng Sunim is also the teacher of more than 150 sunims, many of whom help maintain the centers and assist people who come to the centers.

Hanmaum Seon Center is a member of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
